R&D Support Programs

The following programs provide support to companies working at the R&D phase.

Senior Engineering Design Program
Many engineering students across the state are required to complete a senior design project, which allows engineering and computer science students to work with industry on "real life" problems. This is a way for companies and entrepreneurs to get some technical assistance or a fresh approach to an engineering challenge. See the Senior Engineering Design Program page for more details.

Intellectual Property Assessments and Audits
Seattle University offers free Intellectual Property audits and assessments to companies through a program in its law school. Professor and experienced attorney Karrin Klotz leads the Intellectual Property Licensing and Intellectual Property Audits/Assessments clinical courses at Seattle University, which focus on real-world application of skills as a student project. Students are trained in the practical application of intellectual property concepts to business needs and plans, on domestic and international levels.

A key aspect of the clinical lab is to match law students with companies, to perform actual assessments and audits. This comprehensive process involves mapping the company's IP assets, assessing potential liabilities for IP infringement, and making recommendations for protecting and exploiting those assets and avoiding liabilities. The program has proven to be successful in the past and a "win-win" project for both companies and students. Audit reports are confidential. Audit Projects take place during spring semester; Assessment Projects take place during fall semester. Companies interested in participating in the IP projects should contact Karrin Klotz at karrink@comcast.net
