The federal Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program is a highly competitive three-phase award system that provides qualified small business concerns with opportunities to propose innovative ideas that meet the specific research and development needs of the federal government.

Forbes Powell, President/Owner and Research Director of Luxel Corporation. During its 20-year history, Luxel Corporation has won 24 SBIR awards totaling $7M. In the last 3 years Luxel has won 5 awards out of 6 proposals; it seems clear that Luxel’s tactics work. Luxel’s mission is to find solutions to significant scientific and engineering problems through the use of thin film and related technologies. Mr. Powell will share Luxel’s methods for winning SBIR projects. Luxel being evidence of success, Mr. Powell will present his strategy for growing a company with new product development funded by SBIR/STTR awards.
William Ross, VP Product Development, VP Diagnostics, Inc. and Dr. William Kerwin, Associate Professor, Vascular Imaging Laboratory, University of Washington. VP Diagnostics won a SBIR Phase II Competing Renewal – funding for up to $3M over 3 years. This award from NIH enables clinical trials – a pivotal phase in attaining FDA approval for medical products and devices. VP Diagnostics had previously been passed over for SBIR funding. Mr. Ross and Dr. Kerwin will explain how they leveraged the work and deliverables achieved in a Phase II project to win a coveted continuation award.
Vincent Stevens, CPA with Clark Nuber – Clark Nuber is a full service public accounting firm with over 135 professionals in their one office in Bellevue, Washington. Vincent Stevens is a shareholder in Clark Nuber’s Entrepreneurial Services Group and leads the firm’s Life Sciences Niche. Mr. Stevens provides audit and financial consulting services, particularly for organizations receiving federal funding. Mr. Stevens’ practice expertise is in assisting clients in identifying, applying for and managing federal awards including SBIR / STTR awards. Mr. Stevens will explain direct and indirect costs and how to appropriately budget as well as track costs and meet compliance requirements – essential to both winning awards and to receiving a clean audit.
