Birgitte Ahring, Ph.D., director for the Center for Bioproducts and Bioenergy at Washington State University Tri-Cities
Dr. Birgitte Ahring, an internationally recognized microbiologist, joined Washington State University in August 2008 as director of the Center for Bioproducts and Bioenergy and as the Battelle Distinguished Professor. Dr. Ahring received her Ph.D. in microbiology in 1986 from the University of Copenhagen and previously was at The Technical University of Denmark. She is an authority in the use of anaerobic bacteria -- bacteria that exist in an oxygen-free environment -- to biodegrade waste. She was the founder and Chief Executive Officer of BioGasol, an engineering and technology company that designs and develops technologies for second-generation bioethanol production. BioGasol is a partner with California-based Pacific Ethanol in the Northwest’s first ethanol plant, which is being built in Boardman, Ore., with $24 million from the U.S. Department of Energy.
 
Dean Allen, CEO, McKinstry
Dean has over 30 years experience in the design, construction and real estate industries in the Pacific Northwest. Through Dean’s vision as President and CEO, he has built McKinstry from a mechanical contractor into a comprehensive design, build, operate, and maintain enterprise with over $400 million per year in revenues and over 1,600 employees. McKinstry is the premiere design/build mechanical and electrical firm in the region, complemented by extensive service, facility management and energy services operations. A leader in the energy and sustainability aspects of the industry, McKinstry currently serves energy service clients from 12 offices across the Pacific Northwest, Rocky Mountains, Midwest and Southwest. Dean has served the community in a variety of industry and philanthropic roles. He currently serves on the boards of the Seattle Biomedical Research Institute, Global Partnerships, the Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH), and Seattle Children’s Hospital. He also serves on the Washington Roundtable and the Partnership for Learning. Dean earned Bachelor of Science degrees in Biochemistry and Psychology from the University of Washington where he graduated magna cum laude.
 
Julie Anderson, senior policy advisor, Washington State Department of Community, Trade and Economic Development
Julie Anderson is a senior policy advisor for the Washington State Department of Community, Trade and Economic Development, where she arrived in April 2007. She concentrates on green economy, workforce development, global health, and industry cluster policies. Concurrently, Julie is an elected official, serving as a Tacoma City Council Member since 2004. For over 20 years, Julie has been known as an advocate for local government, a public servant, and commonsense administrator. Julie's past professional service comes from a wide variety of fields, including political strategy, human services, criminal justice and business association management. She is a 2009 Woman of Distinction, a 2008 Woman of Influence, and a 2004 "40 Under 40" (acknowledging young business leaders in the South Sound). Julie is an American Leadership Forum senior fellow.
 
Ash Awad, P.E., vice president, McKinstry
With over 15 years of energy efficiency experience, Ash is responsible for evolving McKinstry's energy services, sustainable services, and facility services business lines, while providing the vision and leadership for a variety of related strategic initiatives. His extensive knowledge in the energy efficiency industry includes systems engineering, evaluation of sustainable ideas, development of alternative-financing solutions, and optimizing and securing utility incentives and grants. Ash is a registered professional engineer, and as a vice president he has the corporate responsibility for a staff of over 200 of the finest energy and facility services professionals in the industry. He and his team support cities, counties, school districts, universities, medical centers, and commercial clients in a variety of energy and facility related services. Ash is actively involved in many industry organizations. He is the current President of the Board of the Northwest Energy Efficiency Council (NEEC) which promotes energy efficiency policies, programs and technologies that create jobs and foster economic growth in the Northwest. In 2007, Ash served on a technical working group of Governor Gregoire's Climate Advisory Team. Ash has a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts and a Masters Degree from the University of Washington.
 
Lane Ballard, Director of BCA Lean Enterprise Office, Boeing
Lane Ballard graduated from Virginia Tech in 1997 in Mechanical Engineering and began his career at Boeing working advanced composite manufacturing process development and assembly technology development on the F-22 Fighter Program. Mid-2003 Lane was selected by Boeing to attend the Leaders for Manufacturing Program at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston. There he obtained a master of business administration and a master of science in mechanical engineering. Upon graduation, Lane returned to the Washington where he had responsibility on the 737 final assembly moving line before completing an international assignment in Nagoya, Japan helping Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Inc. support Boeing rate increases across airplane programs as well as helped begin MHI’s Lean journey. Upon return, Lane led the 737 Tooling and Shipside support organizations responsible for the production platform. Recently Lane was named Director of BCA Lean Enterprise Office helping define and advance a single BCA production system architecture aligned into value streams and focus on quality, flow and stability.
 
Rud Browne, chairman and founder, Ryzex
Rud Browne is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of The Ryzex Group, which specializes in the full lifecycle (supply, repair, refurbishment and recycling) of Barcode, RFID and Mobile Wireless computer equipment. Ryzex employs 350 people in four countries. In 2005 Rud challenged the Ryzex team at his largest facility to recycle all of its waste. The team reached its goal of recycling 100% of its waste and then Ryzex decided to actually reduce its level of recycling. Rud will tell us how they got to 100% and why they decided that doing a little less than this was the best approach.
 
James L. Buelt, manager, Nuclear Energy Sector, Energy and Environment Directorate, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
Jim is the manager of the Nuclear Energy Sector at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. In this role, he is responsible for developing the relationship and business with the DOE Office of Nuclear Energy and the nuclear industry, which currently totals approximately $15 million/yr at PNNL. He serves as the face to the client for all of PNNL's nuclear energy science and engineering activities. He is responsible for the development and execution of the nuclear energy strategy for the Laboratory on how to best deploy its scientific and facility resources for the safe, secure, and economic expansion of nuclear power. Jim has a B.S. from Oregon State University in Chemical Engineering.
 
Douglas R. Call, Ph.D., College of Veterinary Medicine, Washington State University
Dr. Call received his early training in wildlife management from Washington State University (WSU, Pullman, WA) and Humboldt State University (Arcata, CA) after which he earned his Ph.D. in Zoology at WSU. Postdoctoral studies took Dr. Call to the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, MI) where he studied immunopathology and to Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (Richland, WA) where he helped develop nucleic acid-based detectors for bacterial pathogens. Dr. Call is now an Associate Professor at the College of Veterinary Medicine (WSU) where his research program includes work on zoonotic diseases (E. coli, Salmonella, Campylobacter, Listeria, and Vibrio), antibiotic resistance, aquaculture, and water quality. Dr. Call’s lab employs a variety of advanced techniques to carryout studies in comparative genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics. He is a member of the WSU School for Global Animal Health, and NIH-WSU Zoonosis Research Unit, and serves on the Board of Editors for Applied and Environmental Microbiology.
 
Maria Cantwell, U.S. Senator for the State of Washington
Senator Maria Cantwell has always embraced the values she learned growing up in a strong working-class family. Maria was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2000 and 2006, pledging to honor the hard work, aspirations, and faith of the people of Washington state. Maria continues to work to build new growth and new partnerships for Washington State. She has protected countless jobs in Washington's aerospace industry by cracking down on foreign companies' unfair trade practices and has worked to create more jobs through investments in new technology and job training. She has also aimed to make life more affordable for all Washingtonians. She has been an advocate for better educational opportunities and affordable, accessible health care. Maria has been a tireless fighter for energy independence, and as the new Chairwoman of the Subcommittee on Energy, will continue to fight to move America toward a 21st century clean energy future.
 
Frank Catalano, principal, Intrinsic Strategy
Frank Catalano is a business executive, author and veteran media commentator. Currently, he is principal of Intrinsic Strategy (
www.intrinsicstrategy.com) which provides insight on marketing and business strategy as well as interim executive assistance for companies in technology and education. The emphasis is on practical approaches to customers and markets, and creatively determining how to successfully do what hasn't been done before. Prior to returning to consulting in fall 2008, Frank spent four years as senior vice president of marketing for the global media company Pearson's U.S. testing and K-12 education businesses, providing leadership in branding and marketing strategy as well as acting as an internal consultant on marketing best practices. Before Pearson, Frank consulted technology-related organizations on both a project and interim executive basis, including Apple, Corbis, McGraw-Hill, the Toy Industry Association, MetaMetrics, PC Data and others. He is also a well-known public speaker and has co-authored two of the "Dummies" books on marketing, plus hundreds of published essays, columns and articles. He is a former TV and radio broadcaster (including KCPQ-TV and KING Seattle), columnist (Seattle Weekly, Puget Sound Business Journal, others), blogger and fiction writer. Kendra Chappell, Project Manager for the Safe Water Project, PATH
Kendra Chappell is the Project Manager for the Safe Water Project at PATH.  In this capacity, she supports the project director and works broadly across the project team to ensure activities, resources, and disciplines are planned, managed, and implemented.  Kendra also works with the project team to communicate with external and internal parties, builds and tracks relationships with collaborators, and works with the Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to gather strategic insight into the project implementation. Kendra has more than 15 years of team building, program management, client relationship management, and communications experience.  She built this experience as a recruiter, project and operations manager, technology director and account manager for an information technology services and consulting company and, previously, as a public affairs officer in the US Navy.  Kendra holds a BS in English from the US Naval Academy. 
Lisa Cohen, M.A., director, Washington Global Health Alliance
Lisa Cohen is the Director of the Washington Global Health Alliance, a coalition of the state’s leading global health organizations. Ms. Cohen’s career includes 25 years in journalism as a newsroom manager for Seattle television affiliates KOMO, KING, KIRO and KCPQ, and as a documentary and special projects producer for CBS “60 Minutes” and “The Early Show”. She served as interim Executive Director for Seattle CityClub and as Communication Advisor for Governor Christine Gregoire during the 2004 election. She is an adjunct journalism professor at the University of Washington, where she earned degrees in Broadcast Journalism and International Communications. Lisa has served on boards and advisory committees for Seattle CityClub, PATH’s Leadership Committee, Springboard Alliance, Children’s Hospital and the Governor’s Horse Park Authority.
 
Bill Crounse, M.D., senior director, worldwide health, Microsoft Corporation
Bill Crounse, M.D., is Senior Director, Worldwide Health for the Microsoft Corporation. He is responsible for providing worldwide thought leadership, vision, and strategy for Microsoft technologies and solutions in the healthcare provider industry. Prior to joining Microsoft, Dr. Crounse was Vice President, CIO and Chief Medical Information Officer for Overlake Hospital Medical Center and the Overlake Venture Center in Bellevue, Washington. He is also the co-founder of a technology company dedicated to improving information exchange and connectivity between physicians and their patients. Dr. Crounse is known locally and nationally for his work in television broadcasting and medical communications through work with ABC Network News, Lifetime Medical Television, Discovery, Medical News Network and other outlets. Prior to joining Overlake Hospital in 1995, Dr. Crounse was a physician and medical executive with Virginia Mason Medical Center and Group Health in Seattle. He received his B.S. Degree at the University of Puget Sound and is a graduate of the Medical University of Ohio. As a board certified family physician, he practiced medicine in the Seattle area for 20 years.
 
Jim A. Dangerfield, Ph.D., executive vice president, FPInnovations
Jim A. Dangerfield, Ph.D., is presently Executive Vice President of FPInnovations. FPInnovations brings together FERIC, Forintek, Paprican, and the Canadian Wood Fibre Centre of Natural Resources Canada as the world’s largest private, not-for-profit forest research institute. Jim has played an important role in structuring the new organization. Prior to taking on his role at FPInnovations, Jim served as Vice President, Forintek, and had a leadership role with Forintek in both Eastern and Western Canada. He has worked extensively with industry in commercializing technology developed at Forintek. He also was responsible for setting up the Athena Sustainable Materials Institute, as a spin-off from R&D initiated at Forintek on lifecycle analysis of buildings and building products. He received a Ph.D. in Microbiology, a M.Sc. degree in Soil Genesis, a Bachelor of Science with a major in Soil Science and a minor in Plant Science from the University of Alberta. Before joining Forintek, he held positions as:
- Scientist and Research Manager with Canadian Forest Service (1969 – 1982)
- Director of Research for BC Ministry of Forests (1982 – 1985)
 
Grant Degginger, mayor, City of Bellevue
Grant Degginger is currently in his second term as the Mayor of the City of Bellevue. He has served as a member of the Bellevue City Council since November, 1999, including one term as Deputy Mayor. Prior to his election to the City Council, he served for over six years on the Bellevue Planning Commission. Grant has assumed key leadership positions in regional infrastructure and growth planning. He is the immediate past-Chair of the Cascade Water Alliance, a consortium of eight East and South King County cities and water districts that supply water to over 300,000 residents and 22,000 businesses. He serves on the King County Growth Management Planning Council and the PSRC Growth Management Policy Board. As chair of the City of Bellevue's Construction Codes Advisory Committee, Grant worked hard to streamline the permitting process, improve delivery of inspections and other development services. Grant is a shareholder in the Lane Powell PC law firm where he chairs the firm's construction and real estate litigation practice group.  Grant and his wife Kathy have lived in Bellevue since 1982 and have two teenage sons.
 
 Bob Drewel, executive director, Puget Sound Regional Council
Bob Drewel is the Executive Director of the Puget Sound Regional Council. Under his leadership, PSRC developed the Prosperity Partnership, a broad coalition of over 290 business, government, non-profit, labor and community organizations who are working together to promote and implement a unified regional economic strategy. The region was recognized with a national award for this effort by the Alliance for Regional Stewardship. Bob is well known for his successful promotion of regional solutions to the many challenges facing the Northwest. In 2006, the Municipal League of King County honored Bob as Public Official of the Year for his regional leadership. Prior to leading PSRC, Bob served three terms as the Snohomish County Executive. He is the former chairman of Sound Transit, Past President of the Puget Sound Regional Council, and the former President and CEO of Everett Community College. Bob is a 1970 graduate of the University of Washington. He lives in Arlington with his wife, Cheryl. They have two grown daughters.
 
George Erb, editor, Puget Sound Business Journal
George Erb is editor of the Puget Sound Business Journal. He has been a reporter and editor for weekly and daily newspapers in Washington state since 1983. Erb is a past chapter president for the Society of Professional Journalists. Currently, he is a member of the state Bench-Bar-Press Committee and a board member for the Washington Coalition for Open Government. Erb has a bachelor’s degree in history from Hanover College and a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Oregon.
 
Daniel S. Friedman, dean, College of Built Environments, University of Washington
Daniel S. Friedman is dean of the College of Built Environments (formerly the College of Architecture and Urban Planning) at the University of Washington. Prior to joining CBE, he served as director of the School of Architecture at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Friedman lectures and writes on professional education and ethics, public architecture, and twentieth century theory. He is a member of the board of directors of the Cascade Land Conservancy, and was recently named among this country's "25 Most Respected and Admired Design Educators of 2009" by Design Intelligence magazine. Friedman earned his doctorate in architecture from the University of Pennsylvania. He is a registered architect in New York, Ohio, and Illinois. He was elected to the American Institute of Architects College of Fellows in 2001.
 
John C. Gardner, Ph.D., vice president, Economic Development and Global Engagement, Washington State University
Washington State University President Elson Floyd created the office of Economic Development and Extension in July of 2007, appointing John Gardner as Vice President to lead this new effort. Having worked in both universities and business, Dr. Gardner leads the effort which links private, public, and philanthropic partners to better leverage all of WSU’s assets for economic growth and vitality of the state. Just prior to WSU, Gardner spent six years at the University of Missouri as the Associate Dean/Director for Research and Outreach in the College of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources after which he became the Vice President for Research and Economic Development, a position similar to that he currently holds at WSU. Currently, he is focusing on efforts in clean technology, working to forge relationships for WSU in the biofuels, sustainable design, and alternative energy resources.
 
Billy M. Glover, managing director – environmental strategy, Boeing Commercial Airplanes
Billy Glover leads an enterprise-wide team responsible for developing and implementing a global environmental strategy for Boeing Commercial Airplanes. Under his leadership the team is addressing key issues facing the aviation industry including aircraft noise reduction, greenhouse gas emissions, alternative fuels research, public policy and opinion. His cross-functional team is also providing input on key product design elements for maximizing the environmental performance of Boeing aircraft. Glover, who previously led derivative product development for Commercial Airplanes, has held various engineering assignments with the company involving 707, 727, 737, 747, 757, 767, 777 and 787 airplanes, as well as product development, research programs, and government and commercial contracts. He also has extensive experience leading government and industry relations initiatives. Glover is an associate fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics. Glover is a member of the Industrial Advisory Committee for Herrick Labs, Purdue University and is a board member of the Air Transport Action Group (ATAG). He is co-chair of the Algal Biomass Organization. Glover joined Boeing in 1978, after graduating from Purdue University with a Masters of Science in Engineering, with an emphasis in engineering acoustics. He received his Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Engineering in 1976 from Purdue University. In addition, Glover has completed executive education studies at the Harvard Business School.
 
Bert Gregory, FAIA, president & CEO, Mithun
As President and CEO of Mithun, Bert Gregory has led the 220-person firm to national recognition for concept-based, environmentally intelligent design. He is renowned as an expert in the development of resource-efficient structures and communities, and serves as a national leader, speaker and advocate for sustainable building and urbanism. His perspective reaches beyond traditional architecture to merge science and design -- an interdisciplinary approach that creates lasting places for people. With Mithun’s expansion in 2008 to a second office in San Francisco, Bert strives to expand the reach of the firm to inspire a sustainable world through integrated design. Awards include four AIA COTE Top Ten Green Projects, two ASLA national honor awards, and the AIA national honor award for regional and urban design. Bert currently serves as Vice-Chair of the USGBC LEED® Neighborhood Development core committee.
 
Robin Halliday, chair, board of directors, Washington Technology Center
Ms. Halliday has more than 25 years of senior management and project management experience in small technology companies. She retired at the end of 2006 after 25 years with DIS Corporation, the leading provider of business systems to agricultural and construction equipment companies in North America. She most recently managed as Vice President of Network Services and continues to serve on their Board of Directors. From 2001 to 2006, she was CEO of Rivetek, a network services subsidiary of DIS. Ms. Halliday was founding president and currently serves as President of TAG (Technology Alliance Group), a trade organization for technology companies in Northwest Washington. Halliday is a Rotarian and serves on a number of other education and technology focused boards including Junior Achievement, Skagit Valley College and Western Washington University. She is also President of the Bellingham Whatcom County Public Facilities District. Ms. Halliday is a graduate of the University of Washington and has a post-graduate degree from Western Washington University.
 
Hamilton Hazlehurst, development manager, Vulcan Inc.
As Development Manager, Hamilton Hazlehurst is responsible for managing Vulcan's interests in a variety of commercial, residential, biotechnology and mixed-use projects currently under development in Seattle's South Lake Union neighborhood. During his 20-year real estate career, Hazlehurst has developed more than two million square feet of office properties. He has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to Vulcan's "triple bottom line" development principles, resulting in projects that generate market rate returns, make positive impacts on the community, and protect the environment through sustainable approaches that conserve natural resources while creating healthy places to work and live. Prior to joining Vulcan in 2001, Hazlehurst worked at Seattle's Wright Runstad & Co. from 1984-2001. Among his many accomplishments, he served as the project development manager for several high-profile developments including Seattle's World Trade Center, Microsoft's World Headquarters and Dearborn @ 5/90. Hazlehurst also served as a project architect from 1983-84 at Curtis Beattie & Associates in Seattle. He holds a master's degree in architecture from Rice University Graduate School of Architecture and a B.A. in art history from Princeton University (Magna Cum Laude).
 
Michael Hochberg, assistant professor of electrical engineering, Nanophotonics Lab, University of Washington
Michael Hochberg received his BS (Physics, 2002), his MS (Applied Physics, 2005) and his PhD (Applied Physics, 2006) from Caltech, and he was awarded the Demetriades-Tsafka Prize in Nanotechnology for the best dissertation by a graduating Ph.D. student in the field of Nanotechnology As an undergraduate, Hochberg co-founded two companies: Simulant, which sold the first commercial distributed FDTD code, and Luxtera, a venture-funded company working to commercialize silicon photonics. As a graduate student, he worked on developing integrated nonlinear optical devices using silicon photonics. He was also the recipient of an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship and, as an undergraduate, of a merit-based fellowship from Caltech. He recently joined the faculty at the University of Washington in Electrical Engineering, where he was the recipient of a 2007 Air Force Office of Sponsored Research Young Investigators Program award.
 
Susan H. Jones, AIA, LEED AP, principal, atelierjones llc
Susan Jones is the founder of atelierjones, an award-winning, nimble 5-person architecture, sustainability consulting and planning firm that creates delight in the dense urban realm. Focusing on sustainable design, small urban infill residential projects, adaptive reuse and renovation projects, her projects deftly entwine design, economy, and green solutions. Devoted to research and innovative approaches to design projects, atelierjones is known for crafting innovative, value-added solutions for their clients' highly unique projects. Described as an "incubator of design ideas" by a recent client, the firm values collaboration with all its team partners from owner to contractor. Her work has won multiple design awards and been published and exhibited nationally and internationally. With over 20 years of experience, she is registered in over 15 states as a professional architect, in addition to being a LEED professional. Kyle Juergens, Project Development Manager, Andgar Corporation
Kyle is the Project Development Manager in Specialty General Contracting for Andgar Corporation.  Andgar has partnered with GHD, a leading designer of anaerobic digester technology, to develop and construct anaerobic digesters in the Pacific Northwest.  This digestion technology is targeted at the dairy industry with the goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, creating renewable energy, and providing a clean source of bedding.  To date Andgar Corporation has constructed three anaerobic digesters in Washington State with the fourth currently under construction.  These projects have proven to be beneficial to the environment, the economy, and the dairy industry.  Anaerobic digesters are becoming a more popular technology in the reduction of non-dairy organic wastes. Kyle has a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Technology and Management from Washington State University and extensive experience in the dairy industry through his experiences growing up on his family’s dairy farm.
Donald I. King, FAIA, president and principal architect, DKA
As President and Principal Architect of DKA, Donald King is responsible for the firm’s direction and overall management. With over 40 years of professional experience, Donald has led the firm in the planning and design of over 350 successful projects. As an architect, Donald is known for his strengths as a planner, programmer, and designer. His project experience includes commercial, health care, community facilities and affordable housing. Donald is recognized for his creation of culturally appropriate and comforting environments that meet his clients’ budget and schedule needs. Donald King is licensed to practice architecture in Arizona, California, Hawaii, Michigan, Nevada, Oregon and Washington.

Vipin Kumar, Ph.D., P.E., associate professor, UW Microcellular Consortium Director, Mechanical Engineering Department, University of Washington
Professor Kumar graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology at Kanpur, India with a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical engineering in 1970. After getting an MS and an MBA from University of Rhode Island, USA, he worked in the nuclear piping systems industry for 10 years. In 1984 he joined MIT mechanical engineering department and graduated with PhD in 1988. Since that time he has been on the mechanical engineering faculty at the University of Washington at Seattle, USA. Kumar’s professional interests lie in areas of design, manufacturing, and technology transfer to industry. His research efforts have primarily focused on microcellular foams processing, characterization, and applications development. He holds three patents and has authored or co-authored over 100 publications in this area. Professor Kumar is a Fellow of the Society of Plastics Engineers.
